Horse Racing at Southwell
Rotary District 1220 Polio Eradication fund-raising evening |
Our club supported this event
with a bus load of members, friends and members of other adjoining clubs. The evening
meeting at Southwell had a Rotary theme throughout and provided an excellent night of
exciting racing, with some long winning odds (130/1) and tight finishes. The weather
though cold stayed dry for the evening, with patches of sun. If anyone has a photo illustrating this event, please send it in, thanks Roger |

Cystic Fibrosis |
Caroline Kew representing the
Nottingham Hospitals Charity Cystic Fibrosis Campaign, and Caroline Spencer who is one of
thousands of people living with Cystic Fibrosis were invited by the members to attend our
lunch time meeting to tell the club about the new Cystic Fibrosis centre at the Nottingham
City Hospital. The charity is currently trying to raise £2.1 million to transform NHS care for patients with Cystic Fibrosis. President Jonathan Toon on behalf of the members thanked them both for their powerpoint presentation.

Interact Club Handover Evening

members of the Long Eaton Rotary Club were pleased to be part of the Interactor Club's
Presidential handover evening. The club is based at Long Eaton School. Over sixty Interactors and Rotarians sat down for dinner at Cleve Lodge and were entertained by the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band. Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages twelve to eighteen. Rotary Interact Clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary Clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self supporting.

Maurice and Pat Adcock of W A V
E (Wyvern Amateur Video Enthusiasts) showed the members two 1935 cine films shot by J H
Poyser and rescued from a skip. The first was a documentary on the activities of the Long Eaton Urban District Council, from rubbish and road maintenance to electricity production and water supply. The second was a drama entitled The Inheritance. Both were fascinating in their own way and showed many views of Long Eaton over 75 years ago. Rotarian Geoff Birkin gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the club.

twinned clubs in Aars, Denmark and Settsu, Japan. Over 130 were present and the later
entertainment was singing by Cantata, the raffle raising over £400 for 'Wish upon a Star'

Community policing was the
subject of our speakers at the Long Eaton Rotary lunch time meeting today. Police Constable Gemma Hawkins and PCSO Sean Hill gave the members a brief talk on their role as community police officers in Long Eaton town centre and the surrounding area, and invited questions from the members. Led by police officers, neighbourhood policing teams include police community support officers (PCSOs) often together with special constables, local authority wardens, volunteers and partners. PCSOs play an important part in the delivery of neighbourhood policing. Their primary role is to provide high visibility reassurance policing, dealing with low level crime and anti-social behaviour. President Jonathan Toon thanked both Gemma and Sean for coming along and speaking to the members.

David Farnsworth was our guest
speaker, talking about the Arena Food Bank in Ilkeston.The Arena church, just opposite
Tesco's in Ilkeston, had become increasingly aware of the number of local people who had
no food and were in need of emergency supplies. In June 2010 the Church launched its own food bank, starting on the simple but effective premise that the congregation bring groceries as often as they can, and teams of volunteers are on hand to sort, pack and distribute. Over 500 pepole have been assisted to date. Whilst this is a limited service David said that they were hoping to be able expand with the help of others, and in the future include a furniture bank. Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow Alan Wiggins thanked David for coming along and speaking to the members.

Katie Dundas made an appeal to
the club for sponsorship in her attempt to raise money for Lymphoma Cancer Research, in
memory of an uncle who has succumbed to the disease. With her friends, she is attempting a
gruelling seven hours on an indoor climbing wall, and hopes to raise in excess of a
thousand pounds.

The members of Long Eaton
Rotary were pleased to have has their speakers today, Beryl Hallam and Brian Stevenson
from the Long Eaton Talking Newspaper. Our club has supported the project in the past
through Ted and Barbara Minton. We all know how important it is in our day-to-day lives to read newspapers, magazines, periodicals and other sources of information. This service is for the blind, and partially sighted in Long Eaton and the surrounding areas. Beryl and Brian came to remind the members of the club's long standing support for their work, and to tell of their plans to use the new digital technology to give a better service. The Vote of Thanks was provided by John Adams, his first since 1978. We have missed out on some real talent here!

The Annual General Meeting of
the Long Eaton Rotary Club was held this lunch time, to prepare for the next Rotary year
that starts on July 1st 2012. Rotarians often wish to recognise the hard work of others, by donating in their honour, and presenting them with a Paul Harris Fellowship award for services to Rotary and their communities. President Jonathan Toon took this opportunity on behalf of the members to award club member Alan Wiggins a Paul Harris Fellow citation, for all his work within the club over the last thirty years. Alan was shocked, but delighted, and thanked the members for his appointment as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Maureen Rushden was the speaker
at the Long Eaton Rotary Club today. Maureens talk and power point presentation was
on the Canary Girls of Chilwell. This was the story of the siting and operating of the ordinance depot at Chilwell, and the events leading to the massive explosion at the No 6 Shell Filling Factory that occurred on July 1st 1918. The result of the explosion left one hundred and thirty four dead, and two hundred and fifty injured. The full story can be found in a book published by the Beeston & District Local History Society. On this occasion the vote of thanks was given by Past President Rotarian Bert Wild.

Eco-Interact Club
Crocus for Polio Plus cheque presentation |
The Eco-Interact Club,
sponsored by our club and based at Long Eaton School, had a fund-raising project for the
Rotary/Gates effort to eliminate polio in the world. A crocus bulb cost 20p, the same as a
polio vaccination for a child under 5. The £170 raised represented 850 bulbs planted
along Lone Eaton canal and 850 children saved from this awful disease, prevelent in the UK
only 40 years ago. PDG Rtn. Keith Hammond attended this meeting of the Club, thanked them for the cheque that they presented to him and gave them a progress report on the project, hopefully now reaching its final stages.

Club member Rotarian Ian Viles
was today the speaker at our lunch time meeting. Ian, a keen entomologist, gave the members an interesting talk and power point presentation about his study of moths, saying that it can be a very interesting and enjoyable past time. His talk included many pictures and examples of mimicry and camouflage as well as speaking about their habitat requirements The members were impressed and left with a better insight on the subject, and how important their garden may be to the local invertebrate population. Past President and Speaker Finder Rotarian Geoff Birkin gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the members.

a great success. Arranged entirely by Alan Wiggins with M C Tony Gregory, over 100 happy
punters enjoyed an excellent evening of racing for charity. Thanks to all our sponsors and
to members of the Eco-Interact Club who ran the Tote. Over £1,000 was raised for our
Charity account.

Long Eaton Rotary over the last
few months has had many interesting and varied speakers, today was no exception. The speaker on this occasion was Kate Shaw a member of the Long Eaton Community Garden steering committee.Kate informed the members about the proposed garden, and how it was progressing. It is hoped that the garden will benefit the local community, especially the local school children. If all the necessary planning and permissions are forthcoming the garden will be sited on land at the end of Trenton Drive Long Eaton. All club members are invited to
give a "My Job" talk. On this occasion it was the turn of club member Rotarian
Alan McGowan. These talks always provide an insight into the individual. With the help of a projector he gave an overview of his education and training as an architect and a sample of the many projects he had been involved with; this also included some humorous anecdotes. Alan is now a director of Alan McGowan Architects Limited based in Long Eaton. Rotarian David Kirk himself a local architect was pleased to give the vote of thanks on behalf of the members.

The Dolphins of Greece |
Todays talk was given by
Club Member Rotarian Barbara James. Barbara had won a place from the Jane Goodalls Roots
& Shoots charity for a week as a scientific research volunteer. The week was studying
dolphins with the Earthwatch Institute and Tethys Research Institute in the Amvrakikos
Gulf, Greece. Having answered all the questions and met all the criteria for selection,
Barbara won a place on the team.

This week an evening meeting to
celebrate the birthday of Robert Burns, Scotland's favourite poet, born 1759. This year's charity was for Everymans in memory of Bill McMorran, who had carried the whisky bottles for the haggis ceremony for the past many years. £325 was raised by raffle for Everyman. Bruce Liddle was the Piper and Jimmy Willan again presented the address to the Haggis.

Rotarians David Lumb and Chris
Burke from the Rotary Club of Dronfield gave the members of Long Eaton Rotary a very
interesting insight into The Fishtail Fund, a joint project between the Rotary Club of
Dronfield District 1220 UK and Pokhara Fishtail, District 3292 Nepal. The Fishtail Fund supports clever children from poor Nepal homes to stay in school. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. The purpose of the fund is to enable clever children from poor Nepal homes to stay in school. It only costs £60 per child per year - not a lot for a huge difference in potential opportunity. her trip on the expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua last July. Ellie went on the
expedition with a company called World Challenge. World Challenge provides what they
describe as "educational expeditions in the developing world" in over 50
destinations.

Today we were pleased to
welcome Mr Andrew Dodson as our speaker. Andrew's topic was about his company the Greenhatch Group Ltd and their involvement in making a 3D survey of Stonhenge. The survey was carried out on behalf of English Heritage using the original and ground breaking Cyrax laser scanning system. Rtn. Past President Martin Cain gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the members for a fascination presentation.

The speaker at Rotary lunch today was Mr Dean Anderson. Dean came to enlighten all the members about the Canaan Trust, its beginnings and its goals. Canaan Trust was formed by Dean as The Aspire Trust in 1995.They are a Christian Charity that specialises in providing 24/7 Support Accommodation to those of Long Eaton who would otherwise be homeless. Rtn Tony Gregory again gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the members.

Combat Stress |
Our guest speaker today was
Margaret Allen informing members about her role with Combat Stress, which is the UKs
leading military charity specialising in the mental health of Veterans. It provides
specialist support and treatment for over 4,800 mentally-scarred Veterans across the UK
aged from 20-101, who have served their country in conflicts from WW2 to Afghanistan. They
are currently supporting 132 Veterans in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Margaret was also promoting the new 24 hour helpline for serving personnel, veterans, families, carers and loved ones. (0800 138 1619 24 hours/day 365 days/year Rtn. Tony Gregory gave the vote of thanks to Margaret for a most moving talk.

Today's fascination talk by Ian
Marsden was on a topic that everyone just took for granted - how does a local council
comply with it's legal duty to find out what it's public want. This remit goes right
across every single activity in which the Council is involved - from Abandoned vehicles to
Waste recycling. A variety of methods are used; meetings, postal surveys, telephone, face-to-face in the street, internet and social media including Facebook & Twitter - Ian uses them all to obtain the public feeling. These results help to formulate Council policy on that topic. Rtn. Geoff Birkin gave the Vote of Thanks.

It was co-incidental that on
Marie Curie's 144th Birthday we had a talk about the charity that she founded. Janette
Martindale told us about the work of the charity which, half sponsored by the NHS, helps
those with a terminal illness, either in hospital or their own home. The Notts branch
alone requires donations of nearly half a million pounds to provide the care sought of
them. Jayne Smyth, a Marie Curie nurse expanded in more detail. Rtn Russell Thomas, in proposing the vote of thanks, said what a pleasure it was to help with Marie Curie street collections as it was one of the few charities to which everyone was a willing donor.

Stephen Shepherd was our main
speaker, suffered from progressive blindness. He was with Stanley. Sue &
Raymond Coxen who, as puppy trainers of Una, were the key to well-trained dogs talked
about training. The life of a guide dog before retirement is 10 years, the overall cost
per dog is £50,000. More puppy trainers sought! Rtn. Barbara James gave the vote of
thanks on behalf of the Club.

At today's evening meeting our
guest speaker was Mr Alan Hopkin. Alan comes from a long line of professional musicians and has been part of the music scene in Derby for over sixty years. His talk on this occasion was reminiscences of an Army Bandsman, interspersed with demonstrations on his clarinet. Rtn Paul Hopkins gave the vote of thanks to Alan for his entertaining talk. President Jonathan Toon was please to present a donation to the Dovedale Friends of Cancer Research that Alan was supporting on this occasion

Our speaker today was Rotarian
Simon Keeling a member of Derby South Rotary Club. Simons subject was the charity CamTad (Southern Derbyshire).CamTAD has a staff of four and a group of volunteers most of whom are hearing impaired. CamTADs major aims are to ensure that hearing impaired people have the highest possible quality of life and are aware of all the services and strategies available to them. In support of these aims CamTAD has acted as a pressure group, selfhelp group and engaged in training and public awareness activities. Rtn Tony Gregory on behalf of all the members thanked Simon for a very informative talk.

today as our guest Councillor Kevin Miller, the current Mayor of Erewash. During the civic year, the Mayor looks forward to visiting as many businesses and organisations as possible. He will be supporting organisations which work with the younger generation especially the cadet units of the three armed services. He has also chosen to support the Derby / Sandiacre Canal Trust. Ambassadorial Scholar Yuko
Homma has spent a year at Nottingham University studying for a Masters in Applied
Linguistics. She was sponsored by the Sakai Phoenix Club of Japan and hosted by District
1220 to study and with accommodation on the campus at no expense to herself. Her host Club was Long Eaton who made sure she felt secure and comfortable during her stay. She is pictured here exchanging banners with President Jonathan on her final visit to the club during which she gave out badges as a memento of her stay and success with her Masters Degree. Having now returned home, Yuko hopes to teach English at a Japanese University.

Today's speaker was Major Sally
Orange, RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps). Sally is the Physiotherapy Officer in
Charge of the Rehabilitation Facility at the Reserves Training and Mobilisation Centre,
Chetwynd Barracks, Chilwell. She is responsible for managing and treating reservist
soldiers injured whilst training for, on, or returning from Operational Deployments in
Afghanistan. Sally and her team achieve this through the provision of three week
intensive rehabilitation courses. President Jonathan Toon was delighted on behalf of the members to present a cheque to the Major for the charity Help for Heroes. Rtn Dr. Joe Rudin gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the Club.

Indoor Olympics Evening |
As a prelude to the 2012
Olympics, Long Eaton Rotary Club decided to hold their own indoor version challenging the
Rotary Clubs of Sandiacre & Stapleford, Church Wilne and Long Eaton Dawn Breakers. All the clubs were well represented and took part in several events, the result being that the Rotary Club of Church Wilne became the overall winners and took away the trophy.

the Long Eaton Rotary Club's speaker today. Chris gave a broad outline of his travels in
eastern Africa. It was an interesting talk with reference to his work on tea and tobacco

Alan McGowan as a member of Long Eaton Rotary Club. Secretary Rtn George Mounsey read the Objects of Rotary as a reminder to all the members why they are members. President Jonathan Toon then inducted Alan into the Rotary movement and to full membership of our club. Alan is a director of Alan McGowan Architects Ltd. It is a small practice dedicated to achieving successful solutions for its clients. They are an R.I.B.A chartered practice based in Long Eaton, ideally placed for projects in Nottingham and Derby.

welcomes Josh Halford to Long Eaton Rotary Club. Josh is aged 15. He lives in Long Eaton
and attends the Long Eaton School. Josh is the first Sea Scout to be chosen in the last
twenty years from Derbyshire to attend the World Scout Jamboree to be held in Sweden at
the end of July. This takes place every five years and there will be 4,000 scouts
attending. Also Josh will be staying at a British Camp in Denmark and then moving to Finland to stay with a scouts family. To raise money for the trip Josh has been bag packing in a supermarket, gardening and baby sitting to raise funds for the trip. Long Eaton Rotary was pleased to be able to make a contribution to his trip from the Smith - Young Fund.

Remap is a very special
charity, working through a nation wide network of dedicated volunteers. These inspiring
people use their ingenuity and skills to help people with disabilities to achieve
much-desired independence in some aspect of their lives or to enjoy leisure opportunities
previously closed to them. Remap already has 85 panels across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and helps over 3000 people with disabilities each year. Vote of Thanks given by Rtn Graham Pidcock
